Milan has formalised the appointment of Igli Tares as the new sports director after months of negotiations, signing a three-year contract.
“AC Milan announces Igli Tares' appointment as First Team Sports Director. He will report directly to club CEO Giorgio Furlani,”, said in the club's official statement.
“We are happy to welcome Igli Taren into the red family,” Furlan added to Milan's official page.
“He is the right person to begin our new phase: competence, determination and strong values, combined with deep recognition of Italian football and an international vision, make him the ideal profile to lead the club's next chapter through the development of an ambitious sports project. ”
Former Albanian and international strikers, who played in Serbia A with Brescia, Bilogna and Lazio, Tare, began his career as chairman immediately after withdrawing from active football in 2008, staying at Lazio for 15 years. He left in the summer of 2023, amid tensions reported with coach Maurizio Sarri a fact that makes Sari's arrival in Milan's bench impossible.
“Taking part in a club like AC Milan is a source of great pride and responsibility. I thank the club for the confidence shown. The club recognises my determination and the desire to succeed: I will devote my entire experience to the service of this big club, which is determined to return to the Italian and European football elite,”, Tare told the club site.
This appointment puts an end to several months of research for a sports director, a role that has been empty since Antonio D'Otavio's departure in December 2024. Milan had reached preliminary agreement with Fabio Paratic in April, but she fell into the water due to the danger of possible penalties over financial irregularities during his time at Juvenous.
Tare was always on the candidate list, but the contract was finalised only after the club received rejections from other candidates, including Tony Démico of Atalanta.
One of Tares' first tasks will be the choice of the new coach, as Sergio Conceicão is not expected to continue beyond this season. Tare will have to build a new project from scratch, as Milan failed to provide any participation in European competitions./Periscopi/
