Underlining EU support for Ukraine's membership, Kos was also asked to speed up the membership of several Western Balkan countries.
She said there is real potential for Albania to wrap up negotiations within 2027 and membership by 2030.
“We have Montenegro and Albania, for example. They're doing great. They are making reforms. They are understanding the enlargement process as a transformation of their economy, including other areas in the country. And, for example, if things continue to go well, we can end all negotiations with Montenegro by the end of 2026 and then with Albania at the end of 2027. This means that it is realistic that both countries become our new members by 2030-18x1>, Kos said in this interview, reports ATS, broadcast Periscope .
She said that even the frustration of some of the other BP venaries can understand, as she says it also comes from this area, which is Slovenia.
And just to give you an idea, if Ukraine should wait as long as Northern Macedonia, we would start negotiations with Ukraine in 2045. And that can't happen. That is also true of the Western Balkan countries. They must implement reforms. And there's another important element in the past. In recent years, enlargement has not been that important to the European Commission. It wasn't a priority. Now it's a priority. Even member states say that”, the commissioner for enlargement said.
Kos praised the German-Slovenian proposal for removing the unanimousness of new countries' decision-making into EU accession.
“possibilities are different. The decisions then belong to the European Council. But Germany, along with Slovenia, has made a proposal to simplify qualified majority rules. And now it is up to member states to decide how to proceed. But it's important that we hand him over. Why? We have promised candidate countries and support them that one day they will become members. They give the right things and when they give the right things, we also have to give the right things and show that we are serious”, Kos said. /Periscope/
