The ultraconservative nation will end the 73-year-old sale and consumption ban in tourist resorts by 2026, the telegrapher writes, Periscope.
Visitors will be allowed to drink wine, beer and apple wine in licensed countries, such as five-star hotels and tourist developments, claimed local media, on plans that were widely reported internationally.
The plans are part of the 2030 Gulf State Vision, an initiative to attract tourists and investments in preparation for the organisation of major international events, including Expo 2030 and the World Cup in 2034.
Authorities said the goal of “is to welcome the world without losing its cultural identity by positioning Saudi Arabia as a progressive but respectable country on the global tourism map”.
Under new alcohol regulations, some countries will be allowed to serve beer and wine. They will be operated by a staff trained under strict licensing conditions.
Alcoholic beverages with alcohol content will remain forbidden over 20 percent.
Since new policies are directed at tourists and immigrants, alcohol at home, public spaces and retail points will continue to be banned by law.
