France takes criminals to the jungle. High security prison in French Guyana.

France has announced the construction of a new high-security prison in French Guyana, an overseas territory in South America, to house drug and radical Islamist traffickers. The initiative was made public by French Justice Minister Gérad Darman during a visit to the region. According to him, the institution [...]
According to him, the security institution will be built in an isolated area north-west of French Guiana. The prison is expected to cost about 400m euros and may have been operational since 2028.
The prison will have capacity of up to 500 prisoners, with a special department for the most dangerous criminals. “This will be an extremely strict regime to neutralise the most dangerous drug traffickers”, Darman told the French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche.
He also said this centre will serve to stop people at the start of the drug trafficking chain, but also to isolate the main leaders of criminal networks operating in continental France. The great distance from French soil, according to him, will make communication with their networks impossible.
The decision comes after a wave of violent attacks linked to criminal gangs, including armed attacks on prisons in France. In some cases, authors have claimed to act “in the defense of prisoners”.
Prisons in France have had constant problems with illegal mobile phones used to keep in touch with inside criminal networks.
The construction of the prison in French Guiana is part of a broader package of new anti-crime measures by the French government, including the establishment of a specialised branch of the prosecution for organised crime, increased the power of investigators and special legal protection for informants.
The building will be built on a strategic <x0-passing” for drug traffickers, especially those from Brazil and Suriname two countries located near the borders of French Guiana.
