By 28 votes for, 24 against and two abstentions at the U congress EFA in Budapest, on May 3rd 2016, Kosovo was accepted as a full-fledged member, thus becoming the 55th member of this European football organisation.
Federation of Kosovo Football Chairman Fadil Vokrri, who was present at the UEFA congress, Kosovo's membership in UEFA named a historic achievement and a delayed justice.
A delayed justice “, but considering the legal blockades that have been presented to Kosovo we managed to be admitted, this is an extraordinary achievement. The moments within the UEFA assembly were difficult because of the course that certain states gave to the assembly. However we managed to join the U EFA and now it is next to membership at the FIFA congress in Mexico, held next week. Even in this assembly, Kosovo's accession is in order of days. So this is a victory for everyone”, Vokri said.
Serbia was positioned against membership. “Politics and football should not be confused in the worst way. We will take care of a protest in the region”, Serbia Football Federation chief Tomislav Karadzic said ahead of the vote.
UEFA membership enabled Kosovo teams to participate in European football competitions. It also paved the way for Kosovo to join the World Football Federation FIFA, Mexico City, at the convention held on May 12 and 13th 2016. /Periscope/
