The case was initiated after a citizen complaint, which had reported that water bills were placed in mailboxes, being displayed half outside the box and thus making them accessible to third parties.
The complainers had presented evidence, including pictures of bills that viewed personal data as name, last name, address and water spending.
This situation could cause misuse of these data and could have consequences for citizens' privacy.
The AIP had warned the Pristina Regional Water Company on February 29th 2024, urging them to take appropriate measures to secure personal data protection during the bill distribution, the telegraph reports.
After that, on June 18, 2024, AIP reminded the company of these obligations. In August 2024, Regional Water Company announced The AIP had begun distributing bills with closed applications, thus meeting security requirements.
However, AIP found that even after warnings and measures taken, the company continued to deliver the bills improperly, exposing the personal data of consumers.
After considering the evidence and legal tests, AIP fined the company 25 thousand euros and ordered it to take immediate measures to ensure personal data protection, in line with the Law on Protection of Personal Data.
The Regional Water Company “Pristina” has a 30-day deadline to pay the fine and can appeal the decision to the Constitutional Court in Pristina, the Department for Administrative Affairs, within this term. /Periscope
