Bulgaria denies involvement in defence alliance between Kosovo, Albania, Croatia

“Bulgaria is aware of the initiative of Albania, Croatia and Kosovo and is carefully analyzing the text of the Joint Declaration signed by the defence ministers of the three countries in Tirana on 18 March 2025. Public information suggesting Bulgaria has expressed informal interest in joining the declaration is incorrect”, Georgiev explained, followed. Periscope.
The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry has received an official copy of the document signed via the Albanian Embassy in Sofia on 25 March.
The Bulgarian Ministry or Side has not been contacted or consulted at any moment about the initiative by its propossors, nor has any official invitation for membership been made, Georgiev said.
In March, Albanian Defence Minister Pirro Veng said Bulgaria had shown interest in the initiative. Also, Kosovo Defence Minister Ejup Macedonia stressed that Bulgaria has shown interest.
“Bulgaria maintains excellent bilateral relations with each of the three countries, two of them are NATO allies and a Bulgarian military contingent is part of the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Kosovo (KFOR), whose main task is to ensure peace and stability”, Georgiev said.
The aim of the declaration is to strengthen co-operation between the three countries and create a framework for joint response to security challenges, hybrid threats and other risks to regional stability.
The document envisions enhanced co-operation among defence industries, greater interaction through education, training and joint exercises, and full support for Euro-Atlantic integration, according to the Croatian Defence Ministry website.
Regarding the defence co-operation agreement between Serbia and Hungary, signed on April 1st, Georgiev said he cannot comment on a bilateral document Bulgaria is not a party.
