Energy Regulatory Office ( ZRERE has warned a 15% increase in the price of electricity in Kosovo, a decision that has caused great concern and frustration in public opinion.
On Saturday, April 5th 2025, protest will be held in Pristina against increasing the price of electricity, where activists and citizens will gather to oppose the price of electricity.
Citizens, businesses and economic experts have expressed concern that this increase will negatively affect the family economy and different sectors, adding financial burden to many social groups.
Democratic Party of Kosovo MP Ferat Shala has been declared against ZRE's warning of costing electricity of 15%, stressing that not enough clarifications have been given regarding the way this figure is calculated.
“ZRRE has warned the price of a 15% current, but has given no explanation of how this figure is calculated and why exactly 15%. Then confusion is in the way of implementation”, Shala says.
He has expressed concern that this decision will further exacerbate the citizens' situation.
If this is rated and 15% growth means linear growth and if it's this growth who cares for the original consumers. If there's escalation, we need to have additional information. But that's making the citizens' situation worth 1>, Shala declared for Frontonline broadcasts. Periscope.
Former Trade Minister Ismet Mulaj has indicated that expensive electricity prices for 15% would favour private energy operators, damaging citizens.
“This decision will be in the function of private economic operators that trade electricity rather than citizens' favor”, Mulaj stressed.
According to Mulajt, more than 1,300 businesses will switch to the free market, where they will buy energy from private operators.
And they're going to buy energy from operators, and they're gonna give the operator space to benefit and that's how the citizen gets hurt. If 1-2000 goes out on the free market, why should there be an increase in electricity”, Mulay says.
Economic knowledge, Jakup Bellaqa, has been declared on the warning of priceing the current for 15%, saying this decision could have serious consequences for social categories.
He has appealed for the ZERE to reconsider the decision and not approve high and affordable prices for citizens.
When there is an increase in the price of social categories and lower incomes, business affects you very negatively. This shouldn't happen, the ZRE shouldn't make a decision about the high and affordable price and make life difficult for citizens”, says Bellaqa.
