After the controversy created by the canceled penalty of Julian Álvarez in the match between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid in the Champions League, UEFA has issued an official statement on the decision made.
Atlético Madrid had contacted UEFA to ask for explanation of the incident, which led to the annulment of the Argentinan attacker's penalty. According to U's statement EFA, FAR had intervened signalling the referee for a double touch of the ball by the player.
Although the contact was minimal, the player touched the ball with the support leg before hitting it with the executional leg, as shown in the movie footage. Under current rules, the VAR was obliged to signal the referee to annul the target”, UEFA's statement said.
The decision has sparked debate among football fans and analysts, raising questions about the interpretation of rules and the VAR intervention in such situations.
Because of the controversy created, UEFA has warned that it will discuss with FIFA and IFAB on the possibility of reviewing the rule in cases where double touch is unintentional.
This statement opens up the possibility of future changes in arbitration protocols, especially for controversial situations like this of Julián Álvarez. It remains to be seen whether there will be any change in existing regulations and possible impact on European football competitions.
