Last Thursday, a journalist had asked Trump in the Oval Office during the media conference, with reports that he had informed Israel's Government of withdrawing US troops from Syria.
I don't know who said it, but we're gonna put something on it. We are not involved in Syria. Syria is a mess itself, they have a lot of problems there, they don't need us to get involved in all of”, Trump replied.
At the end of 2019, Trump had ordered Defence Secretary James Mattis to withdraw all US troops from Syria. Mattis refused the plan and resigned as a sign of protest.
Later Trump would withdraw most of the troops from Syria. But the US presence in Syria has continued ever since.
In December, the Pentagon has announced that about 2,000 troops were deployed in Syria, twice as much as the military had announced over the years, about 900.
The Pentagon has declared that the US military mission in Syria is to destroy the Islamic State terrorist group and support local partners operating there. /Time
