According to reports from “Marca”, the government of Rio de Janeiro has included the stadium among 62 state assets expected to be sold, raise funds and pay off a debt of about 1.7 billion pounds to Brazil's central administration.
Maracana, who has hosted two World Cup finals in 1950 and 2014, costs the state about 140 thousand pounds for maintenance matches.
The president of the commission overseeing the proposal, Rodrigo Amorim, said the sale could bring over 279 million pounds of revenue and that the maintenance of the stadium has become unaffordable to the public budget.
The stadium, with capacity of 78,838 countries, used by the Flamengo and Flumenese clubs, is part of Rio's sports identity and has also hosted Olympic ceremonies and large concerts.
However, the decision to privatise it has caused great public outrage, as many see Maracana as a national symbol of Brazilian football.
The proposal for his sale is expected to be voted by Rio's Legislative Assembly in the coming weeks. /Periscope/
