US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the US expects NATO allies to buy and donate “even more” American weapons for Ukraine under a key arms initiative, while defence ministers from the alliance gathered at its headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday. Speaking with Secretary [...]
Speaking with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte as they entered the meeting, Hegseth said the purchases would take place under the application List initiative with the Priories for Ukraine (PURL) to secure Ukraine “firepower” greater.
Our expectations today are that more countries will donate more, to buy even more to ensure Ukraine, to bring that conflict to a peaceful end”, Hegseth said, broadcast Telegrafi.
Rutte announced the initiative PURL along with President Donald Trump in July. The scheme means that European alliance members, along with Canada, will regularly pay the bill for equipment produced in the US that Ukraine needs to protect from Russian attacks.
NATO says its members have already contributed $2 billion to PURL. Through the initiative, Ukraine has been able to provide essential equipment supplies, including interceptors for Patriot air defence systems and the HIMARS missile.
The first package was financed by the Netherlands, and second by NATO Nordic members Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Germany contributed funds for the third package, while Canada took over for the fourth.
Ukraine has said Belgium, Iceland, Luxembourg and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania had also agreed to provide funds.
