Powerful explosion at a residence during the police operation, death tolls 3 carabinieres, and 13 more injured

A serious event occurred Tuesday morning at Castel d'Azzano, near Verona, in northern Italy.

During an operation to empty an illegally occupied settlement, a powerful explosion caused the destruction of a two-story house, taking the lives of 3 carabinieri and injuring 13 other people, including policemen and firefighters.

The explosion occurred as the law forces opened the door to the apartment, which was filled with gas. Two of the three residents there were arrested, while a third escaped and is still on the run. Preliminary investigations show the blast may have been intentional to prevent police intervention.

The victims are the three Carabiinists Marco Puffari, Davide Bernardello and Valerio Daprà. They were at the scene of the event to carry out an order to evacuate residents and check for dangerous materials, such as the Molotov bomb.

This was not the first time residents used gas to avoid intervention. A year earlier, they had filled their apartment with gas, but then the operation had been postponed and no serious incident had taken place.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Melon expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the victims. She also stressed the importance of the work of carabinieri and domestic security forces.

Interior Minister Matteo Pietados said the blast occurred right after the door opened and was allegedly caused by someone inside the apartment. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said the Carabinieri gave their life doing the job.
