According to NATO Air Command, the IL-20 COOT-A aircraft was identified by flying to international airspace over the northern Finnish region. The intervention was realised as part of NATO's Speed Response Alert.
Through a post on the X network (former-Twitter), the Air Command confirmed the operation, publishing an image of the Russian aircraft.
This incident comes at a time when Russian air provocations have been added in the vicinity of NATO airspace in Europe.
Latvia's president, Edgars Rinkevics, has requested a harsher approach of the alliance, saying that “is the time to switch from air police to full air defense”.
Meanwhile, a commander of NATO has declared last month that the alliance could facilitate procedures for member states facing such threats, including the possibility of dropping aircraft that violate air security.
