The incumbent prime minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, hosted a meeting today by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who has been staying for her fifth visit to Kosovo since 2021. The visit is considered evidence of good and lasting relations between Kosovo and the European Union.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Kurti expressed gratitude for President von der Leyen's continued commitment and support for Kosovo's European path, stressing the need for the European Commission to hand over membership questionnaire as soon as possible and take concrete steps to grant candidate country status for Kosovo.
The main topics of discussion included deepening co-operation between Kosovo and the EU, progress in domestic reforms, rule of law, security, as well as economic and democratic development of the country.
Prime Minister Kurti also underlined the importance of holding local elections held last Sunday, naming them free and democratic, in line with the highest European standards. He stressed the need for a regular transition of power to municipalities where there will be a change of governance, in full compliance with the constitution and laws of the Republic of Kosovo. He also stressed the Government's commitment to protecting democratic processes from any external intervention.
In the function of deepening economic co-operation with the European Union, and in the framework of the “Single Market Street<62> initiative, Prime Minister Kurti handed Presidents von der Leenen three official letters, through which Kosovo expresses interest in starting strategic dialogue in three priority sectors: Agriculture, Information Technology and Communication (TIK), as well as the Defence Industry, in which the country has comparable advantages and high potential development.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the prime minister thanked President von der Leyen for its stable leadership and close partnership with the people of Kosovo, as well as for the ongoing attention he pays to the Western Balkan region.

The incumbent prime minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, welcomed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen today on her fifth visit since 2021, which stands as evidence of good relations.
The prime minister expressed gratitude for President von der Leeyen's continued commitment and support for Kosovo's European journey. During the meeting, it was discussed deepening relations between Kosovo and the EU, reforms and our progress in rule of law and the area of security, democratic progress and economic growth. The prime minister reiterated the need for the European Commission to hand over the membership questionnaire and grant candidate country status for Kosovo as soon as possible.
The prime minister also spoke of holding local elections held last Sunday, which were free, democratic and in line with the best European standards.
