These are difficult times for Josep Martínez, Inter's second goalkeeper, who was involved in a tragic car accident Tuesday morning on Provincial Street 32, heading towards Appiano Gentile, where he lost 81-year-old Paolo Saibene.
The Spanish player, supported by the club's psychological team, is trying to find normality with his teammates and follow his legal situation.
Investigation: autopsy and Martinez version
The news concerns the issue handled by Komos Deputy Prosecutor Giulia Ometto, who, reports La Gazzetta dello Sport, has officially ordered an autopsy on the body of the late. The extradition will take place tomorrow at Sant '%Ana Hospital in Komo. Interi has already announced that he will appoint a medical consultant who will be able to participate in the examination.
The investigation has not ruled out the possibility that the elderly, a man with limited walking skills, may have felt bad and lost control of his electric chariot, with which he was traveling in the lane of bicycles. The version given by Martinez, under vehicle assassination investigation, carabinieri in Lomazzo is essential: the doorkeeper claimed that the elderly moved unexpectedly, to a section of the 90km/h track. This version was confirmed by several witnesses in the car immediately after the incident.
Player response and Inter support
Despite the shock, Martinez chose to appear at the Appiano Gentile training centre in the hours ahead of the Inter-Fiorentina match. The club provided him with a psychologist and gave him complete freedom, but for the 27-year-old Spaniard, who was escorted to the Pietina (his car was seized), his presence was a natural “threat to normality”. In Appiano, he managed to take a break and take a hug from his teammates and Cristian Chivu.
Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri club has taken steps to express its proximity to the victim's family -- just before the match, President Giusppe Marotta contacted Lucian Saibenen, the son of the late elderly, to express his condolences and support Inter.
