Serbia's Football Federation (FSS) said Paunovic would head the national team for the remainder of the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. “Shansets for qualifications still exist, and that is why Veljko Paunovic, along with his coach staff, has agreed to lead the national team in matches against England and Latvia”, the FSS said in a statement.
FSS Secretary General Branko Radukko said discussions about a long-term contract with Paunovici will continue after two qualifying matches, despite their outcome.
Serbia will face abroad England on 13 November and Latvia at home on 16 November. Paunovic won the U20 World Cup in New Zealand with Serbia in 2015.
