The 50-year-old told Sydney Morning Herald there was very little time to evacuate his home when he first noticed a cloud of smoke outside.
The “was worse than any apocalypse you've ever seen and 1,000 times worse”, he said.
The former swimmer, who won five Olympic gold medals, three silver and two bronze medals, managed to take his dog, insulin, a painting of his grandfather and a piece of wood his daughter Gigi gave him before leaving the house.
He said he had thought about medals, but there was no time to take them.
Everybody wants to know, are medals burned? Yeah, everything burned. It's something I can live without. I think everything is just stuff. It'll take some work to start over. ”, he said, reports Skynews.
The great fire that has engulfed this area continues to be fought by numerous firefighters there, and some areas still remain restricted to residents until law enforcement agencies take control of the situation.
