In the first half of 2025, the huge Danish prison system will join a group of Kosovo prison officials.
Twenty to 25 Kosovo prison officers will participate in a pilot project for further training in Denmark as part of the agreement between Denmark and Kosovo for renting a prison for 300 people.
Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard confirms this for Danish media “Ritzau” in a written answer.
“With continued education, we are taking another important step in working that the prison in Kosovo is ready for the admission of criminals sentenced by the expulsion from Denmark”, Hummelgaard says, broadcast Clankosova.tv.
From the minister's response, it is not clear which prison or prisons Kosovo officers will work.
However, for the Konservators' legal spokeswoman in Denmark, Mai Mercado, who in May proposed bringing the prison guards from Kosovo to Denmark, makes sense that it will be in Ringe Prison in Funen. This is where the convicts today suffer punishment with deportation.
She says it is not a desirable “cysitute” for Denmark to now have prison officers from another country.
“We would like to recruit the prison guards ourselves, but we are simply in a situation where we cannot”, Mercado said.
After several years of delay, Kosovo ratified the prison agreement with Denmark in May of this year.
The next step now is to rebuild Gjilan's prison for Danish conditions. Denmark's Justice Ministry expects the first exiles could begin serving prison sentences in the fall of 2026.
Initially, the plan was to have the prison ready for the penalty early in 2023.
Minister Hummelgaard was reportedly staying in Kosovo on Wednesday to visit the Gjilan prison, as well as to meet with Justice Minister Albulen Haxhiu.
With the visit we mark that the project, following the treaty's adoption in Kosovo, is entering a new and important phase.
“In close co-operation with Kosovo authorities, we must now speed up prison reconstruction so that it is ready to house criminals sentenced to expulsion from Denmark”, Hummelgaard says.
