General Oleksandr Syrskii says Ukrainian troops control 1,294 square kilometers of Russian territory and 100 settlements. About 594 Russian military prisoners were captured, he adds.
Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine controlled more than 1250 square kilometers of Russian territory.
Speaking through a video link on Ukrainian TV, Syrsky says that one of Ukraine's targets of attack in Kursk was “to distract a considerable number of enemy troops from other areas”, such as Pokrovsk and Kurakhoe in Donbas, and it was successfully achieved.
He adds that Russia was aware of this objective and is focusing its most willing combat units in the Pokrovsk area”.
