France's president, Emmanuel Macron, called on his Iranian counterpart, Masud Pnezkian, “, to do everything to avoid a new military escalation” in the Middle East, the French Presidency announced. “A military escalation would be in no one's interest, not Iran's, and would damage long-term stability in [...]
A military escalation would not be in Iran's or anyone's interest, and would damage the long-term stability of the region”, Macron told POSkian during a telephone conversation, according to the announcement.
The French president called for halting <x0 revenge logic” and “civil populations”.
Fears of the outbreak of a war between Iran and Israel have increased in recent weeks, following the murder in Tehran of Ismail Haneyeh, the political leader of Hamas the Palestinian radical group declared a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union.
Iran and Hamas have blamed Israel for its murder. Hanieyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of POSkian.
Israel has not claimed responsibility for the murder of Haneyeh, but it has neither denied it.
Hezbollah, Iran-backed Lebanese militant group, has also threatened to retaliate against Israel after Israeli authorities said they killed one of Hezbollah's commanders in Beirut last week.
“Iran must be committed to calling on destabilising actors, who support them, to refrain from escalation”, Macron said.
Earlier Wednesday, POSkian urged the United States and other Western countries to stop backing Israel. /rel
