The United States Secret Service has confirmed that it has stepped up security measures for former US President Donald Trump at the start of the Republican Party Convention, following the attack on him at the weekend.
Secret Service chief Kimberly Cheatle has said that the plans for security for the large gathering to be held in Milwaki, Wisconsin are “responded and strengthened”, following the attack on Trump on Saturday.
The Secret Service is responsible for the current American president and former US presidents.
The body has been criticised after Saturday's incident, when an attacker fired at Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania.
Chetle has said that plans for security measures for the four-day Convention, which starts Monday, will be flexible and will be changed as needed, “to prepare the highest level of defence for those present, volunteers and the town of Milwaki”.
The Secret Service has extraordinary responsibilities to protect the current leaders of democracy, and those of the former”, Chetle said.
It's a responsibility I take very seriously and I'm committed to”.
US Secretary for National Security Alejandro Mayorkas has pledged that the investigation will be made to understand how the attack took place.
“Such an incident cannot happen”, he said on Monday.
When I say it cannot happen, I'm talking about failure”.
Chetle has said the Secret Service will work with all the authorities “to understand what happened, how it happened, and how we can prevent such an incident from happening again”.
She has said she will co-operate in the investigations US President Joe Biden has requested regarding the case. /rel
