The senior official will be obliged to coordinate the alliance's political and practical support on the ground as Ukraine continues to fight against the Russian occupation.
The news comes ahead of NATO's summit in Washington, to be held from July 9th to 11th.
At that summit, leaders are expected to formally approve a plan for co-ordinating military aid to Ukraine, for the first time under an official mission called NATO Security Assistance and Training.
It is now unclear who will be appointed to the new post in Kiev. Further details will be revealed after the official selection, the spokesman said, confirming plans reported earlier by the Wall Street Journal.
NATO, otherwise, has official representation in Kiev for nearly a decade, including a liaison office and an information and documentation centre, which has existed since the late 1990s.
It treats, among other things, contacts with Ukrainian ministries and authorities. / REL/
