According to estimates based on statistics on the recent census in Germany, some 82.7 million of the country's 67.1 million people have been born here, and 15.6 million have come from abroad. 40 percent of these immigrants have taken German citizenship.
Countries from which the largest number of foreigners living in Germany are Poland (12 percent), Turkey (9 percent), and Russia (7 percent). Syria and Ukraine each make up 5 percent of foreigners.
Significant Growth in Ukrainians
However, the number of Ukrainians who have come to Germany to escape war has continued to rise dramatically since the end of the last census in May 2022.
The census is based on a complex data assessment and a survey of citizens, which is organised about every ten years. The published results are also on the website of the Federal Statistics Office. / DW/
