The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution in support of a US-designed ceasefire agreement aimed at halting eight months of fighting between Israel and Hamas. There were 14 votes for, a abstention from Russia and no vote against the resolution.
The resolution's draft was finalised Sunday after nearly a week of negotiations among members of the 15-member council. The agreement aims to take place in three phases. The first will be a six-week ceasefire, the second being the return of the remaining hostages to Gaza and third, a reconstruction plan for Gaza.
The KS resolution calls on Hamas to accept the triphatic plan and asks Israel and the militant group to fully implement its terms without delay and unconditional”.
It is the first resolution adopted by the council to support a specific ceasefire plan. In March, the Security Council voted in favour of an immediate ceasefire in conflict.
