Rutte's appointment became a formalisation after his only rival for the post, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, announced last week's resignation from the race after failing to secure support.
Rutte will take over the post of Secretary General of the Military Alliance on 1 October 2024, when current Chief Jens Stoltenberg's mandate expires.
Stoltenberg, who has been leading 10 years in NATO, said he is leaving the alliance in the safe “” and called Ruttes a leader of “transatlantic enabled”.
“we welcome the NATO allies' decision to elect Mark Rutten as my successor. Mark is a real transatlantic, a powerful leader. I wish him success as we continue to strengthen him NATO for today's and future challenges”, Stoltenberg said. / REL/
