France's Interior Minister Nancy Fyser promised increased security measures on the eve of the championship. “Our main focus is the threat from Islamic terrorism, hooligans and their actions, ordine crimes and violent ones, but this time the risk of cyber attacks,” said Mrs. Faeser at a meeting of about 350 foreign officers sent to Germany for the European Cup.
“Therefore, our security authorities are following the Islamic scene with priority,” said Mrs. Faeser. She added that authorities are unaware of any concrete plot.
Germany predicts 2.7 million people will attend the championships at stadiums across the country and about 12 million in other facilities outside the stadiums, including a large screen space in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
About 22,000 police officers will be at a permanent service to protect security. German authorities are also working with international partners to identify possible threats, and the country has increased border controls. / VOA
