The 27-year-old Afghan attacked a 23-year-old man with a knife-like “target in Wolfstedt, a small town about 130km west of Berlin, on Friday evening, police said. The victim then passed away from his wounds.
The same person later attacked a group of people watching the football match between Germany and Scotland in the courtyard of a private house, wounding three Germans, two seriously, according to police.
Police said the assailant, still armed with the same object, attacked the officers summoned to the scene. Two of the officers shot and wounded the man, who immediately died in the hospital.
Police said the motive for the attack was unclear. The Interior Ministry in the state of Saxon-Anhalt, which includes Wolfmirstedt, said police had increased its presence throughout the state.
The football tournament is being held in cities throughout Germany and lasts until 14 July.
