“5 persons have died and 44 have been injured, ten of them are in serious condition”, Health Minister Fahretttin Koca wrote on the X network, formerly known as Twitter.
The fires include two areas between the cities of Diyarbakir and Mardin, Turkish authorities said.
The photos published on social networks displayed large clusters of smoke in the sky. Koca said four emergency teams and 35 ambulances have been sent to the scene.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Ali Yerikaya, through an X post, said the fire began late Thursday hours in an area about 30km south of Diyarbakir. According to him, the fire then spread rapidly because of powerful winds, including five villages.
Yerikaya said three Diyarbakir residents and two of Mardin lost their lives as a result of the fires.
Meanwhile in northwest Turkey, firefighters are working to extinguish fires near the town of Ajvakik in Canakala province, state news agency Anadolu reported. This province has faced several fires last week due to high temperatures and powerful winds. / REL
