The European Union (BE) is talking to Kiev about possible security guarantees, in order to carry out <x1) major security options” for Ukraine by early July, reports the German newspaper Welt am Sontag.
This newspaper reported on May 11th that it has seen a draft document in Brussels, in which it is also discussed whether soldiers from EU countries can be sent to Ukraine.
Members of the 27 EU member states “were recently reconciled” for a “concidential” 11-page text, according to the paper.
Welt added that the text says that “is ruled out the direct participation of EU soldiers alongside Ukrainian soldiers in combat operations against Russia”.
However, the countries pledge, according to the document, to supply Ukraine with nonlethal weapons and weapons and to assist it with training.
The vast majority of bloc countries have helped Ukraine since Russia began its unprotested and illegal invasion in February 2022.
It has been months since France's president, Emmanuel Macron, has not dismissed the possibility of sending troops from the western allies of Kiev to Ukraine.
Directly questioned in March, he said “all these options are possible”.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin has been trying to describe the military assistance to Ukraine as an indication that NATO and the West are already involved in the conflict.
The United States and other Kiev supporters oppose this portrayal.
NATO and the United States have carefully limited their involvement, not to give Moscow priority in what they describe as an invading war in Ukraine that threatens international order and sovereignty. / REL
