Nine people, including a baby, have died as a result of their shipwreck while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea during a storm.
The fate of 15 other people is still unknown, according to the Italian coast guard's announcement Thursday.
Malta authorities sought Italy's help Wednesday following the shipwreck of the ship about 30 miles [50 km] southeast of the island of Lampedusa. The Italian Coast Guard announced that it has sent a team to the site of the event, saving 22 survivors and finding the bodies of 9 people, including that of a baby”, writes the Voice of America.
The national gravity of the ships is not yet known, but the island of Lampedusa, which lies in the Mediterranean between Tunisia, Malta and the Italian island of Sicily, is the first port for many immigrants intended to go to European Union countries.
