The arrest of independent journalists in Russia has continued to rise, following the arrest of two other journalists at the weekend.
The Associated Press reported on Sunday that Sergei Karel was arrested by Russian authorities in the Murmansk region, on charges of “extremism”, regarding videos he allegedly made for the “Navalny Live” channel on YouTube.
Karel, 41, is a journalist and cameraman and had also worked for the Associated Press and Deutsche Welle as well.
He was arrested just a day after a court in Moscow ordered the detention of journalist Konstantin Gabov on Saturday on the same charges.
Karel and Gabov deny the charges.
The “Navanly Live” channel was founded by the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navajo's Anti-Corruption Foundation.
Russia has intensified the printing of independent media since it began the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. / REL
