The White House has confirmed that it is monitoring a new Russian anti-satellial weapon, which is said to be in progress but has not yet been deployed.
White House spokesman John Kirby called the Russian movement disturbing, while not confirming it, but also directly denied that the Russian weapon was nuclear.
Kirby said that the Russian anti-satellial weapon violates the 1967 Foreign Space Treaty, which prohibits the deployment of nuclear weapons or prevents the deployment of other weapons of mass destruction.
This is not an active skill that has been established, and although following this particular capacity from Russia is disturbing, there is no immediate threat to anyone's security. We're not talking about a weapon that can be used to attack human beings or cause physical destruction here on Earth. That said, we have closely monitored this Russian activity and we will continue to take it very seriously”, said Kirby, writes The Guardian.
The Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke about it during his visit to Albania, where he said that “is a potential that we are taking very, very seriously and I expect to have more information very quickly”.
From Tirana, Blinken said the Biden administration is also discussing the issue with allies and other partners.
