According to the prosecutors of the case, Mr. McGongal had not only declared taking money, but had advanced Mr. Nezaj's business interests and lied to the FBI about their joint activities, thus hiding the fact that he had private interest conflicts and financial interests.
This is essentially corruption that undermines transparency and trust in the integrity of the government's Executive Branch. The defendant had vowed to investigate and prevent crimes against the United States and not commit them”, the Voice of America reports.
In September, Mr. McGonnigal pleaded guilty to the federal court in Washington on all charges involving Albania, including pre-reported contacts with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and the informal adviser to Prime Minister Dorian Ducka.
The plea was made under an agreement between Mr. McGonali's prosecutors and lawyers. In exchange for admitting guilt for one of the points of the indictment, it was for hiding material evidence, prosecutors dropped from the other eight points.
