Election results in the US have ever been revealed within hours of the closure of the vote, but this year's tight race could mean a longer wait, the Telegraph broadcasts.
When is the outcome of the 2024 presidential election expected?
In some presidential races, the winner was announced late on election night, or early next morning. This time, the tight race in many countries may mean that the media will wait longer before predicting who has won.
Democrat Kamala Harris, current vice president, and Republican Donald Trump, former president, have fought head-to-head for weeks.
Legal challenges are also possible. More than 100 pre-election indictments have already been filed, including the challenges to voter rights and the management of the voter list, by the Republicans.
Other scenarios that could cause delays include any election-related disorder, especially in the polls.
On the other hand, the numbering of votes has accelerated in several areas, including Michigan's crucial state, and much less votes will be cast by mail than in the last elections, which were during the Covid pandemic.
When were the results of previous presidential elections announced?
The 2020 elections were held on Tuesday (November 3rd). However, American television networks did not announce the winner Joe Biden until late Saturday morning on November 7th, after the outcome in Pennsylvania became clearer.
In other recent elections, voters have had a much shorter reception.
In 2016, when Trump won the presidency, he was declared winner shortly before 3: 00 a day after the elections.
In 2012, when Barack Obama secured a second term, his victory was designed before midnight the day of the vote itself.
However, the 2000 elections between George W Bush and Al Gore were an obvious exception.
The vote was held on November 7th, but the two taxis went to war for a tight race in Florida, and the race was not decided until December 12th. The US Supreme Court voted to end the process of recounting the state, which kept Bush in the country a winner and handed over to him the White House.
What are the main countries to see in 2024?
Throughout the country, the first polling stations will be closed at 6:00 pm on Tuesday evening, and the latest polls will be closed by 0100 early Wednesday.
But this race is expected to come down to results from seven wavering states, which experts believe can surely be won by Harris or Trump. These are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
At 7: 00 p.m., the polling stations in Georgia and five other states are closed, and partly in two other countries. That is also when American television networks are likely to start making their first night calls, in less competitive states like Kentucky.
At 7:30 a.m., the polling station is shut down in three states, including North Carolina.
At 8:00 p.m., polling stations in Pennsylvania, 15 other countries, and the District of Colombia, as well as in part in Michigan and four other countries.
At 9: 00 a.m., all remaining polling stations close in Michigan. The vote will also end in Arizona, Wisconsin and 12 other states.
At 2: 00 p.m., the polls are closed across Nevada and two other states, and partly in two others.
How does the vote count work?
Typically, votes cast on Election Day are initially counted, followed by early and postal votes, those that have been challenged, and then ballots abroad and military ones.
Election officials sometimes appointed, elected, verify, work and count individual votes, in a process known as research.
Verification of the ballots includes comparing the number of active voters; removing, expanding and examining each leaflet for tear, stain or other damage; and documenting and investigating any differences.
The number of votes includes the introduction of each one into electronic scanners reflecting their results. Some circumstances require manual counting or twice controlled calculations.
Each state and locality has rigorous rules about who can participate, the order in which votes are processed and which parts are open to opinion, including how party observers can monitor and interfere with the vote count.
What happens if the results of the presidential election are rejected?
After each valid vote has been included in the final results and after the processes as recountings have been completed, election results are first certified in local jurisdictions, then at the state level.
A state executive, usually the governor, confirms what is known as a list of electors to represent their state in electoral college. These electorates meet in their respective states on December 17th to cast their ballots and to be sent to Washington.
On January 6th, a new US Congress meets at a joint session to count electoral votes, with the current vice president leading.
After the 2020 elections, Trump refused to accept and gathered supporters to march in the U.S. Capitol while Congress was gathering to prove Biden's victory.
He asked his vice president, Mike Pence, to refuse the results, but Pence refused.
Even after the riots stopped and members of Congress regrouped, 147 republics voted unsuccessfully to overturn Trump's loss.
Election reforms have since made it more difficult for lawmakers to reject certified results sent to those from individual states. They have also clarified that the vice president has no power to unilaterally reject the electoral votes.
Trump, his candidate, JD Vance, and the main Republican leaders at Capitol Hill have in some cases refused to state without a doubt that they will accept the results if he loses.
When is the presidential inauguration?
The president-elect will begin his mandate after it is inaugurated on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the facilities of the US Capitol complex.
This will be the 60th presidential inauguration in US history. He will swear in a vow to uphold the Constitution and then deliver his inaugural speech.
