Several troops were found after parts of southern and eastern Spain were hit by severe floods Tuesday, with several countries receiving record amounts of rain in just a few hours.
Images from the city of Valencia showed huge water flooding through the streets, tearing down walls, and taking parked cars with them.
Valancia's regional leader, Carlos Mazon, told reporters early Wednesday that some troops were found as rescue teams began arriving at areas previously cut off by the floods.
“Unfortunately, we can confirm that some bodies have already been found, but for respect to families we will not give more details”, Mazon said.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that an unspecified number of people are missing because of floods and urged citizens to act on “greater caution” and avoid movement if not necessary.
The Spanish government established a crisis committee Tuesday, according to the La Moncloa Palace. He will be headed by Sánchez and on Wednesday will co-ordinate the work of the Civil Guard, National Police, Civil Defence Directorate General and Military Emergency Units.
Warnings of extreme rainfall were in force Tuesday for several areas, including those around Valencia, according to Spain's Meteorological Agency, AMER.
Rainfall warnings continue until Wednesday in parts of eastern and southern Spain, according to the AEMET. /MeteoBalkan/
