Joe Biden, the American president, said Israeli reports that Hamas' leader, Yahya Sinwar, had been killed, marked a good “day” for Israel, the US and the world.
In a written statement posted on X, Biden said Israeli authorities informed his national security team earlier Thursday that an IDF mission would likely kill Sinwar.
He said DNA tests conducted since then “have now confirmed that Sinwar has died”, adding:
“This is a good day for Israel, the United States, and the world.“
Beden told the people of Israel, “this is certainly a day of relief and memory”, comparing it to the American sentiment following al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's murder.
He said he planned to speak to Benjamin Netanyah and other Israeli leaders to congratulate them “and discuss the way of bringing hostages home to their families and to end this war once and for all”. He added:
There is now the possibility of a “day after” in Gaza without Hamas in power and of a political solution offering a better future for the Israelis and Palestinians.
