Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has fired Defence Minister Olexei Reznikov, saying the ministry needs “new approaches since the war with Russia enters its 19th month.
This week, parliament will be required to make a personnel decision... I've decided to replace the Ukrainian Defense Minister. Olexia Reznikov has spent more than 550 days in large scale of war,” said the Ukrainian leader, reported CNN.
Reznikov's departure comes after a series of corruption scandals involving the Ukrainian Defence Ministry. While Reznikov is not involved in any of them, scandals are still seen as damaging him by association.
Zelensky appointed Rustem Umerov, the former Ukrainian delegation, to become the new defence minister.
Ukraine's “Verkhovna Rada (legislative) well knows this person and Mr. Umerov doesn't need any additional presentation”, Zelensky said. I expect parliament to support this candidate”.
