He was born in 1936, and in 1998 he won the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine. His name today is held by the hospital in the town of Gostivar, while he is an honorary citizen of the Chair municipality in Skopje, as well as an honorary doctor of science at Tetovo State University.
What he won the Nobel Prize for
Ferid Murad was rewarded with the highest prize for discovering the role of nitric oxid in the cardiovascular system. His discovery that nitical oxid (NO) causes blood vessels to relax and expand, has widespread applications in medicine today. It is used to regulate blood pressure; it fights infection; and it deals with heart and lung disease, as well as cancer, shock, and impotence.
Not only did the discovery contribute to a better understanding of how information is transmitted between cells but it also had a significant impact on cardiovascular medicine, leading to changes in post-accus care in the heart. Research and its findings on the effects of nitrid oxid continue to influence the treatment of cancer and arthritis and other human diseases.
As a professor at George Washington University's School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Murad has received many other awards and honours, including the Albert Medical Research Award and Mary Lasker, the Ciba Award of the American Heart Association, and the Baxter Award for Research by the American Medical Association.
