Hill said these were the “really difficult negotiations”, but that Belgrade did the homework and prepared well.
Christopher Hill told Tanjug he hopes the process can continue and that with participation in it, Serbia can continue to work towards membership in the European Union.
And there should be no other country between Serbia and the EU. Serbia must work with the EU. And my impression, of course, my initial impression of what happened in Brussels is that there has been some progress for Serbia,” he said.
He stressed that the European Union has a huge responsibility.
“They made a lot of effort and I think the United States expressed a very principled position that we will support Mr. Borrell. If he is pleased we will be; if he is not satisfied, we will be very disappointed”, the American ambassador said.
He stresses that people should realise that within Brussels' dialogue there are actually two negotiating groups between the Belgrade and the EU sides and the Pristina and the EU.
I didn't participate in negotiations, there were no Americans there. But of course based on what I read, Mr. Borrell said the Serbian side was well prepared and essentially agreed with what the European Union proposed,” said Hill.
He added that, as he understood, the European Union tried to propose a kind of compromise formula.
As I understand what Mr. Borrell said, they're trying to create a plan for the course of events. The issue of the Union of Serb municipalities, the issue of a larger Kosovo space for internationalisation, they are trying to work to establish the order of these elements. So we're gonna have to see how this all works. As I said, it's really difficult negotiations, but I think Serbia has done homework and it's well prepared”, Hill concluded.
