EU Foreign Policy spokesman Peter Stano has said that High Representative Josep Borrell has accepted the letter signed by over 50 different deputies of Western states, and where it has been called on US, EU and Great Britain to change access to Serbia, and to be harsher.
Stano has said the EU makes the unanimous decisions of 27 foreign policy member states and that Borrell whenever he accepts a letter reacts through proper channels.
The “can confirm that not long ago, the High Representative, has received this joint letter and as always when he receives letters from everyone, reacts through appropriate channels, not publicly through the media. When it comes to the subject raised by 56 signatories and parliamentarians of several EU states, and some third states, I can say that the EU policy is unanimously formed by 27 member states, as it is said to be decided by the governments of these states. We have thousands of parliamentarians in the EU. The EU's position and actions are decided by the decisions of the governments of the 27 member states, in terms of foreign policy is unanimously decided”, Stano has said at the media conference.
Stano has insisted that the EU is impartially facilitating the dialogue and that it took measures against the Government of Kosovo due to Kosovo authorities' “inability to behave in a European manner”. He has not indicated when or whether the measures will be removed.
“As far as dialogue and issues related to Kosovo and Serbia, the EU is impartial facilitator helps the two sides reach the compromises needed to normalise relations. What we have done recently, after the recent escalation, we have taken measures against the Government of Kosovo, due to its inability to start behaving in a European way, and to relax the situation and take the necessary measures for expansion. And in the same spirit as the EU and member states, since everything we do is done in union and consultation with member states and with international partners, in this context primarily with the United States, if they decide then we will take necessary measures to Serbia, if member states see that in the current atmosphere, in the current context of the crisis, Serbia is doing something about austerity. Our approach is balanced. Of course, all measures are reversed, depending on how partners behave on the matter of deespassing and moving forward to return to normal process of dialogue”, Stano said.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has said Thursday that the EU must remove the measures as soon as possible. Kosovo authorities have reduced the presence of policemen in municipal facilities in the north, while have also expressed readiness to hold new elections in four northern municipalities.
Stano has said the EU expects Kosovo and Serbia to behave in a European manner.
What the EU expects is European behaviour, to find European solutions. After all, both states want to enter the EU, have stated that European integration is their strategic priority. Then they must act on the statement and behave in a European manner. It tends to behave constructively in terms of enlargement, being able to find a proper compromise, a European consensus. These are text messages we give every day, week, week, month, month. The crisis is not caused by the EU facilitator, it is caused by the way partners choose to achieve whatever their goals are, but is helping them on the European road”, Stano said.
