After more than four and a half years, The Hague-based Special Chambers have stopped investigating Driton Lajci, the former leader of the Financial Support of Individuals Charged by the Special Court under the Justice Ministry.
News of the interruption of the investigation into Lajci has confirmed Toby Cadman's lawyer's office today, Lajci's defender.
Lajci was suspected that in the quality of the head of the Special Court's Protection Office, he had obstructed justice and uncovered certain confidential documents.
Lajci's defence lawyer, Toby Cadman in an interview for “Info Plus” in RTK has praised the investigation into Driton Lajci as the first victory of judicial processes in the Specialised Chambers.
This is the first success. This had to be decided four years ago, but the judge had taken four years to stop the investigation. It's very clear that he has denied all criminal behavior, but he had to wait four years and renounce his governmental position. That is to regret, but it is good that the investigation has now been fired against him”, Cadman said.
He has since shown what Driton Lajci was investigated for over the years. He started investigating in 2019 for administering justice evidence. So, it wasn't an investigation into war crimes, it was an intervention in justice. This has been under investigation for four years, until last night, when it was fired as an investigation by Special Chambers”, lawyer Cadman added.
He has also talked about steps to be taken now after Lajci has been violated the labour rights for more than four years in public institutions.
This is something that I'm going to consider taking the first steps, but for now the important thing is that this decision has finally been taken and, as I said, all the charges against him have been denied”, Cadman stressed. He has said they will take this case to the court panel and then to the ombudsman.
Investigations into Driton Laic had started with an interview on May 3, 2019. He had been interviewed for three days at The Hague. And since then, for four and a half years he remained as a suspect, and the investigations were not concluded by The Hague Prosecution.
