The heat wave is continuing in southern Europe as temperatures in the central Mediterranean are expected to peak during today.
The Italian island of Sardinia is expected to have a peak temperature of 46 degrees Celsius this afternoon, and there are warnings that extreme heat can continue for another 10 days in parts of Italy. In the capital city of Rome, temperatures can last more than 40 degrees Celsius per 15 days.
Spain has also faced successive heat waves, with temperatures reaching 44 degrees Celsius in the south of the country yesterday.
There have been fires on the Spanish island of La Palma and in continental Greece, and there have also been reports of power cuts in some areas as an increase in demand due to air conditioning.
As the heat wave across southern Europe continues, on Monday, the World Meteorological Agency (ËMO) verified the new temperature record in Europe, reaching 48.8C (119.8F) in Sicily during a heat wave in August 2021.
