Balkan Barometer 2023: Albania most corrupt, Kosovo with greater desire for migration

Corruption and the depopulation of the Western Balkans are among the most disturbing problems of citizens of the region. The Balkan Barometer 2023 for the first six months of this year, recently published by the Regional Co-operation Council, brings public opinion through polling of some 600,000 citizens and 12,000 businesses in the Western Balkans in terms of [...] expectations.

Corruption and the depopulation of the Western Balkans are among the most disturbing problems of citizens of the region.

The Balkan Barometer 2023 for the first six months of this year, recently published by the Regional Co-operation Council, brings public opinion through polling of some 600,000 citizens and 12,000 businesses in the Western Balkans in terms of their life and work expectations, trends in the region's political, socio-economic situation, their attitudes towards regional co-operation and the integration of the Western Balkans into the EU.

In the six countries of the region -- Serbia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, Kosovo -- 27 per cent of citizens surveyed think the level of corruption has increased. According to them, corruption is the biggest worrying problem for the region's development and the fulfillment of their aspirations.

Albania with highest corruption in region

According to the public perception of 38 per cent of Albanian citizens surveyed, Albania is the country with the highest corruption in the region. In second place, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Northern Macedonia come with 26 per cent, followed by Montenegro and Serbia with 25 per cent. The lowest level in the Western Balkans in terms of public perception of corruption has Kosovo with 22 per cent of its citizens surveyed.

Following the consequences of corruption, 69 per cent of citizens surveyed at the regional level feel that the law does not apply equally to all, the level making up 7 per cent more than a year ago.

Low Trust in Political Parties

The majority of citizens surveyed in the region -- 75 per cent of them -- do not trust political parties. While 45 per cent feel threatened by illegal possession and misuse of weapons.

Region exhumation - 71 per cent of youth wants to emigrate

Emigration and brain drain from the six Western Balkan countries is a disturbing problem for the region. At the regional level 44 per cent of respondents wish to leave their country, which is 5 per cent higher than last year.

Alarming is the prospect of youth life in all six countries in the region: 71 per cent of young people project life in migration, away from the country of origin.

According to data published by the Balkan Barometer 2023 at the top of countries in the region regarding migration, Kosovo stands at 57 per cent of its citizens surveyed, followed by Montenegro with 45 per cent, Albania at 44 per cent and Serbia with 41.

The lowest level in the region is Bosnia and Herzegovina, where only 38 per cent of its citizens surveyed project their lives by leaving the country.

EU has lowered support for region

Balkan Barometer 2023 data shows that 59 per cent of citizens surveyed in the six countries think there is a decline in support of the region from the EU, a figure that represents a public perception of 3 per cent more than last year.

At the top of the region's countries for this perception lies Albania with 92 per cent of its citizens surveyed, followed by Kosovo with 66 per cent, North Macedonia with 60, Bosnia and Herzegovina with 52 per cent and Serbia with 34 per cent.

Regional public perception of the Balkan Barometer 2023 for declining EU support of the region is published three months before development on October 16th in Tirana, at the upcoming Berlin Process Summit. This process began in 2014, under the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, as a diplomatic initiative by former German cancellelare Angela Merkel to give new impulses to EU integration through the promotion of regional dialogue and co-operation of Balkan countries before their EU integration.

According to Balkan Barometer data, 2023 six countries in the region positively evaluate regional co-operation: 76 per cent of citizens surveyed think that regional co-operation is good for their economies, 69 per cent think that things that unite Balkan citizens are more important than what they share. / DW/
