Lajcak for Association: A Vital Law That Is Acceptable to Both Sides

The European Union's special envoy for dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, Miroslav Lajcak, has declared ahead of the new round of negotiations in Brussels that the Association of Serb majority municipalities statute in Kosovo should be acceptable on both sides and in line with European standards. The steering team will [...]

The presiding team will present the draft. We don't know what's in it, but it has to be the beginning of the process. Finally, we must have an acceptable statute for both sides -- for both Kosovo and Serbia -- in line with European standards. This is the first important step”, Lajcak told Croatian news agency “Hina”.

He added that in the end it will depend on both sides what the statute will look like.

“We are here to implement what is agreed on during dialogue. This has not been imposed, it has been agreed between Serbia and Kosovo in 2013. For us it is important that any solution be European”, Lajcak said.

As he said, the EU does not want to create an association based on a model that has not been tested in the world before.

“So we have to apply what has been agreed on before, but at the same time we have to take inspiration from practical solutions to existing European models. “We don't want to create something that has never been tested anywhere in the world, but we want countries to find inspiration in European models that function well”, Lajcak stressed.
