Europe is getting ready for Biden loss

There is another year before the US enters the polls, but at the heart of Europe, things are being done rapidly in case of any possible change in the White House. “has strong EU-US co-operation and co-ordination. From official levels to the highest”, says an EU official who wants [...]
“has strong EU-US co-operation and co-ordination. From official levels to the highest”, says an EU official who wants to be anonymous.
“The EU is aware that co-operation is not good and can change if someone comes into the house like Donald Trump. Europe is trying to take advantage of the time it has left by reviewing common files and topics”, the official says.
The EU, a group of 27 countries, was thrilled when Joe Biden won the presidency, following the 4-year-old challenge with Donald Trump, when the transatlantic connection resulted at the lowest level. Both sides have different views on trade, defence and technology and not forget, some tensions.
But there was a drastic improvement as Biden entered the office. His style and policy were very much linked to Brussels, including the topic of pandemic and climate change. This was further clarified with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, where leaders came together.
“The US and EU have taken a firm stand against the Russian attack”, EC President Ursula von der Leenen said. “Putin said he would divide us, but we are more united than ever. “
But it is possible that the current agreement could be concluded if a new president comes to the White House.
The “will be a difficult relationship”, says Kevin Klowden, director of Milken Institute, in the case of a republican victory scenario. “The Europeans worry America might stop supporting Ukraine”.
When Trump was asked who wants to win the war, Russia or Ukraine did not respond. Nor did he admit that he could continue supporting Kiev if he again won the presidency. But he said the conflict would end in 24 hours if he returns to the leadership post.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is expected to open his 2024 campaign, said the US should not be further involved in the Ukrainian war.
“Transatlantic Partnership remains essential for the EU”, a European diplomat said, also speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the situation.
However, the same source said that the relationship may seem slightly different in the future, however, as Europe seems to become less dependent on other parts of the world including China and the US.
“The EU is developing its path towards strategic autonomy, which does not mean we are turning our backs on our allies. Rather, it means that we should be better able to make our elections”, the same diplomat said, adding that this will continue regardless of who is in office at the White House.
In Europe it is understood that whoever the future American president is, of course, will have US interests in mind, which often disagree with what Europe wants. Evidence of this was when the Beden administration, despite a close relationship, introduced unprecedented green subsidies that threatened the European economy. The US Act on Reducing Inflation left Europe blind and in search of co-ordination.
Meanwhile, elections across the EU are expected in June 2024, and officials in Brussels say they have until the end of this year to complete policy actions. Officials believe they will not be able to adopt new legislation from January onward with lawmakers focused on their election campaign. / CNBC
