Can pornography become a person?

If you Google “the addiction to pornography” to appear hundreds of articles that seem reputationy in the way this problem should be addressed. These articles, published often on the website like MedScape, Medical News Today, and Healthline, talk about the disease, give advice on how to get the help and ensure that you are not the only one suffering from it.

In addition, there are Web sites that automatically accept that help people affected by so-called addiction, such as “NoFap” and “You need Brain on Porn. ”

But the wonder is that, in fact, according to all the psocological frameworks of the classification, actually one cannot become clinically dependent on pornography. Neither sex addiction nor addiction to pornography are part of the DSM, a mental disorders classification system made by the American psychiatrists' association (APA), nor part of the ICD, a similar system of diseases of all kinds, made by O BSH (World Health Organization).

But if you have personally had such experiences or have seen this in the panther, you know that pornography consumption can come out of control and damage your relationship. After all, all these articles, the website, stories on YouTube don't come from nothing. What, then, is the situation with this so - called addiction to pornography?

Mortrolling exacerbates work

The concept “independence from pornography” appeared for the first time in the United States in the late 1970s, says an article published in 2016 in the magazine Sexual Education and Compulsivity, sexual dependence and pulse. It has been used by the majority moral movement, a political organisation of rightist Christians and the Republican Party in the US, which believed in promoting what they called the traditional family “value”. The leaders of this movement believed that the consumption of pornography posed a danger to a clean marriage “” and its values.

Pornography's addiction is often self - diagnosed. According to Joshua Grubbs, a clinical psychologist and a researcher on pornography at Ohio's Bowling Green State University, if one thinks that it is dependent on pornography, it often has to do with moral beliefs regarding pornography consumption.

Grubbs calls the phenomenon “moral complexity” devoid of moral harmony, for those who think that pornography is morally bad but who continue to view pornography and feel that they have a problem with it, are even dependent, although pornography consumption is considered normal by most standards.

For such people, pornography does not affect their lives in the same way that classical addiction affects, and the problem may have more to do with shame and stigmatization than it does with considering any addiction.

Sex Pathology

Part of the problem of introducing sex under addiction has to do with the stigma associated with it. Moral judgment often shapes the view “ ” that there must be sexual desires to be socially acceptable. This may play a role in improper medical unorthodoxity of sexual behavior, which may be quite common but does not respond to accepted standards.

The best example in this regard is the practice of homosexuality. By the early 1970s, homosexuality was considered a psychological disease, a classification based on moral and religious stigma.

Stanford University psychologist and former drug centre at the White House during President Obama's time, Keith Humphreys, told Deutsche Welles that trying to see if someone's sexual behavior is causing problems that should be dealt with by psychologists or psychiatrists, he would ask the patient: “Are you really enjoying this? Are you working in life, or is this interfering with other things of life like work or health? Is this destroying relationships with other humans? ”

If none of these things happened, then we would say, well that's how you want to live, right? “Because there's no harm being done. If you don't harm anyone, you don't harm anyone else, it's no part of medicine. Because this is not about what is expected of us. We are here to help people who are somehow damaged, sick, pick the right word. We are not here to make judgments, to satisfy people's moral views. ”

Despite moral discussions, there are sexual behaviors out of control

However, psychologists agree that even if we put away prejudices and judgments, the desire for pornography and sex is present and can cause harm. This desire can become obsessiond and can endanger human relations and their work.

Isabel Hauser, a professor of psychiatry and the director of the psychiatric and psychotherapist clinic for non-reputed patients at the Charite University Hospital in Berlin, has treated only two sex - dependent patients in 30 years. They had to have sex or look at pornography five times a day - every day, which hindered their relationship and frankly went to the core, she says.

Problems related to impulsive control of sex are more often observed in men, but women have similar experiences.

Despite the mention of so - called sex addict Harvey Weinstein, for example, he called himself such during court legal protection, deep research on the spread and causes of the problem are few. Besides it is difficult to study in general, studies of sex and pornography do not support, and stigmatism is a major obstacle to finding participants in studies.

For thousands of years we know that some people have sexual behavior and get out of control, creating big problems in their lives,” says Grubbs. “ ”

Could a man be addicted to anything other than drugs?

Traditionally, experts have felt that man can only be addicted to substances. But in the 1990s, psychologists began to expand their classification system by introducing addiction called “from behavior” from the custom, where addiction to pornography and sex can be introduced.

Psychologists say people can become addicted to habit, for example, to internet use, video games, sex, gambling, finance, food and purchase.

Can these problems be considered more addiction or impulsive control disorder, it is a very controversial issue, and there is no clear scientific consensus.

“Persistence of a behavior in the face of cosness resulting in a kind of physical dependence, so I define dependence,” says Grubbs. “But that's not the definition that convinces everyone. I know very good researchers who say addiction is not a problem. Or I know others who say: ” well, but addiction is the only thing that matters.” These types of factors are far more elusive than we want to accept. ”

Humphreys says that he thinks impulsive behavior gets into the territory when it starts to cause real damage to one person or another. The person with this problem may think: “I know it's bad, but I can't stand not to. ”

The classification system does not matter for individual care

Depending experts don't worry much about the semantic debate over the complex consumption of pornography, or hypersexuality, or should video game addiction or not be considered. Eventually they say, it's not a problem.

All who were asked to write this article admitted that these problems exist under certain circumstances, although they are not known as dependence on classification psychological systems. Although it may be difficult to call a person “dependent on pornography as he calls it a heroin addict, if the person sees pornography 18 hours a day or sees too often and does not spend time with his partners, then there is a psychological problem that has to be fought, no matter how you decide to name it.
