Ukraine hopes to receive NATO membership invitation early this summer.
So said Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk.
“We expect Ukraine to receive an invitation at the Vilnius summit and start its way into the” alliance, Stefanchuk told Ukrainian television on February 19th.
Next Summit NATO is scheduled to be held on 11-12 July in Lithuania's capital, Vilnius.
On September 30th last year, Ukraine has submitted its application for NATO membership through accelerated procedure.
On the day of the application, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, when asked about Ukraine's NATO bid, said that “any democracy in Europe has the right to apply for NATO membership and NATO allies respect that right. And, we have repeatedly declared that the NATO door remains open”.
Days after, nine Central and Eastern European states have offered their support for Ukraine to become a NATO member, but it is still far from consensus of 30 countries (or 32 when Finland and Sweden are joined in the Alliance). / REL
