The 37-year-old Polish man suffered injuries during Saturday's 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, writes Periscope.
Manager David Moes said he was not sure how long Fabianx, who has started all 24 Friday games this season.
“We do not fully know whether to operate or recover itself, or a time period at the moment,” said Moes.
French Althonse Areola replaced Fabianski after 69 minutes at the weekend and will continue at the goal for Wednesday's match in the fifth round of FA Cup against Manchester United.
Hammers, who travel to Brighton in their next league match Saturday, are in 16th place on the board two points above the drop places.
