This is the first package of sanctions adopted under the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
New sanctions include measures such as enhanced export restrictions for technology and industrial products vital to Russia's economy and military capacities.
Limitations have been extended to include components that can be used in Russian weapons systems. Sanctions are now directed not only towards Russia but also Iran. To prevent these products from reaching Russia, export restrictions have expanded to cover entitys within the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that are distributing robots used in the attacks against civil infrastructure in Ukraine, reports the Express.
“Expanded sanctions against Russia are one of the top priorities of the Swedish Presidency. With its 10th package of sanctions, the EU continues to show determination by adopting several powerful measures that hit Russia's economy and military capacities severely. Our goal is to, together with our G7 partners, increase pressure on Russia and curb those companies outside the EU, which are considering supporting Russia militarily”, said Swedish Foreign Affairs Minister Tobias Billström.
In addition to economic sanctions, nearly 100 individuals and subjects have been added to the list. Sanctions are directed to military and political decision-makers, companies that support or work within the Russian military industry and commanders in the Eagle Group. Transactions with some of Russia's largest banks are also prohibited.
